Another victim of the decline in travel due to COVID lockdowns, the Fontana Village Resort recently announced that they are shuttering indefinitely. The current owners of the lease decided to return the leasr to the TVA, the owner of the actual property. An announcement was posted on the Fontana Village website.
To all Fontana Village Resort & Marina guests, friends, and family: We wanted to let you all know that the recent Owners of Fontana Village Resort have decided to surrender their lease back to TVA as of June 1, 2020. This was a difficult decision to make, but due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of a big part of the 2020 season, they have decided not to continue the lease on the property. TVA is actively looking at the future possibilities for Fontana Village Resort & Marina, but we currently do not have a planned opening date. There are a lot of details to work out between both businesses before any announcement can be made. We ask that you are patient with our staff as we work through the transition.
Fontana Village is a popular overnight spot for visitors to the Tail of the Dragon. Since the route is about 4 hours from Atlanta, and its the only major resort style hotel nearby. Fontana Village featured a hotel, rental cabins, camping, several restaurants and a seasonal ice cream and shop. It was a popular hosting destination for automotive events and car enthusiasts.
Fontana Village has been closed since the Tennessee quarantine began. A number of high profile events, like the RennSport Dragon Run, have had to find alternative locations. It was expected to re-open on June 1st with the mandatory Tennessee lockdowns being lifted. However, it appeared the loss of so much business due to the closure forced them to shutter.
As the announcement notes there are no immediate plans to re-open. The TVA will likely seek a new ownership team to run the resort. Also, when ownership transitions happens its not uncommon that renovations or changes may occur.
