iRacing is considered THE driving simulator. It’s goal to be as realistic as possible. So realistic, in fact, that real NASCAR and IMSA drivers race with it for e-sports. It also supports some of the most realistic hardware and simulators.

For the average fan though you won’t find a more realistic game. This game isn’t for sport. If you are looking for a game where you can drive on the street, do donuts in the middle of the track or mod you favorite car, keep looking. If you want to know what it would really be like drive Le Mans or at Laguna Seca, then this is the game for you.

Another area iRacing focuses on is competitive online racing. Many car clubs and tracks host virtual racing events with vary degrees of competitiveness. While many other games offer online racing, iRacing excels at virtual “series” racing.

iRacing is available on Windows PC. It requires a subscription (called a membership) to gain access to the full feature set.

The game that surprised most enthusiasts when it launched has quickly become one of the best arcade style simulations. While no where near the realism of iRacing, it gained it’s reputation for being an enthusiast friendly semi-authenticate racing game.

It’s still the OG. Early enthusiasts imported the Japanese only version. It had just enough English to be playable. Now with more than 6 editions, Gran Turismo is still the game of choice on Playstation.

12th edition in the series (formerly known as Colin Mcrae Rally) it and it’s sister title F1 2019 show that Codemasters knows how to balance making a game entertaining but complicated. These games don’t have the depth of GT or Forza, nor the realism of iRacing. However, the rally driving is superior to any of the other offerings.

Honorable Mentions

Forza Horizions 4 – A unique take on arcade racing and online world. Rather than the typical “select a car and race at a track”, Forza Horizon’s drops you into an open world where you can race in a variety of events. Win and earn money to buy new cars. The driving isn’t totally arcade since it is based on Forza Motorsports 7.

Assetto Corsa – One of the most beautiful driving games. It’s also one of the most realistic. Other than iRacing few games put this much attention into the details. Tire flat spots, laser scanned tracks, and advanced aero dynamics are just a few of the realistic features it offers.
