Xtreme Experience (XX) was my first experience at AMP and with the Ferrari 458. It was also my first time behind the wheel of a full-fledged supercar. In my head and in the moment, it felt so fast, like I was racing around the track at the speed of light. Let’s just say the dashcam footage later proved that was not the case.
The Experience
For 3 laps, you can, also with the help of an instructor, drive around the circuit and fulfill your dream of racing supercars around a track. They have a great selection of the top supercars to choose from, including Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini. The only downside is after 3 laps, or less than 15 minutes, your experience is quickly over. It’s amazing to get to jump from car to car or ride the same one for another 3 laps. In that respect, it’s a great all-around experience.
With XX there is a wide variety of experience levels in the other drivers. You had people like me who have never driven a super car before out on a track, to people who are seasoned vets and all in between. With the instructor there, it doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or a pro. They can adjust to your skill level. As with all venues like this, there is a large emphasis on safety. You don’t have to be worried about being run off the road. They make it safe but fun.
The Track
I thought the star was the track itself. The highly technical two-mile circuit is so much fun! With two famous corners incorporated into the track design as its highlights, every inch of the track feels incredibly engaging. In fact, I think I was so enamored by the track that I forgot I was driving a Ferrari!
For the raw racing experience, AMP takes the cake. It’s 16 turns let you really experience the dynamics of the car in every corner. With its 98 feet in elevation changes, the hills turn up the difficulty to 11, especially with the blind corner to contend with! It just has a bit of an edge that can feel a bit intimidating and makes it all the more rewarding as you conquer the track.
Xtreme Xperience At Atlanta Motor Speedway
Previously, in addition to offering the experience at Atlanta Motorsports Park, Xtreme Xperience was also offered at Atlanta Motor Speedway. While I didn’t drive at AMS another Shift Atlanta contributor did. It was interesting comparing our two experiences.
When running at Atlanta Motor Speedway they used the infield road course. It’s also a great experience, and easily accessible for those south of the city. compared to the drive to Dawnsonville.
Unforunately over the last few years Xtreme Xperience has discontinued running at Atlanta Motor Speedway and runs exclusively at Atlanta Motorsports Park.
Conclusion
If you are focused on skill building there other probably better experiences available. XX goes too quickly, and is more focused on providing entertainment than instruction. The Porsche Experience Center is much more instructional focused.
What PEC and other events cannot duplicate is getting the honest opportunity to drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini or other super car on one of Atlanta’s best road courses.
Compared To Other Driving Experiences
The Porsche Experience Center is unique because it’s on track at speed laps in super cars. There are lots of experiences that give you time on track in a variety of cars, but few that focus on super car laps. You’ll get to check two boxes off: driving a car of your dreams and time on track.
