Ferrari Returning To Le Mans
Ferrari announced recently that it will be returning to the top class at Le Mans where they hope to compete for an overall championship for the first time since 1971. Ferrari, arguably the most iconic Le Mans participating manufacturer will join the all new Hypercar (LMH) class. Ferrari is expected to join for the 2023 Le Mans race.
The Hypercar class replaces the former LMP1 class. The cars will have an internal combustion engine with a max of 650hp powering the rear wheels, as well as a KERS hybrid system powering the fronts. In addition to Ferrari, Toyota and Peugeot will also be competing as manufacturers in the LMH class. Toyota will join the new class in 2021, with Peugeot set to debut in 2022.
Clearly by 2023 Le Mans will be highly competitive. Even casual fans will know how iconic Ferrari is and what this means for the race. Now if only we could get Ford to come back so we can have a modern day Ford vs. Ferrari.
More Manufacturers Joining Le Mans
More good news is manufacturer support is rising across the board with the recent class changes. The former LMP2 class will be replaces with the new Le Mans Daytona Hybrid (LMDh) class. Already Prosche, Audi and Acura are all on board.
This means by 2023 the top two classes in Le Mans will features: Ferrari, Toyota, Acura, Porsche, Audi and Peugeot, in addition to several other non-factory backed race teams.
