F1 (ish) Cars Coming To Atlanta This Weekend August 1st

This weekend is your chance to watch F1 (ish) cars, along with a number of other Ford and Red Bull sponsored vehicles “run” the streets of Atlanta. As part of Red Bull Showrun series a temporary street circuit near Georgia State Stadium will host a festival style event featuring F1 cars running.

While these won’t be 100% current F1 cars, expect it to be a show none the less. This includes historic F1 cars, along with a specially modified version of the current F1 car. The show is also expected to feature a Ford Raptor and Mustang GT3.

However, don’t expect a full race. While there may be some mock side by side running of the F1 cars, this will primarily be a “stunt show” – donuts, launches, burnouts and other coordinated activities. And that probably means it’ll be a good time for casual cars fans too.

There will also be fan zones, merchandise and much more.

While it’s really just a big promotional event for Red Bull and Ford, it’s still gives us an opportunity to dream about what a professional street race in Atlanta would be like. In fact, just a few years ago the ShiftAtlanta community talked about what it would be like and where one would be held if Atlanta had a chance to host a NASCAR, Indy or F1 style street race.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Summerhill since the Braves left, it is an upcoming intown neighborhood. Georgia State transformed the old stadium, and a host of new development has occurred including a new shopping center anchored by Publix and hundreds of residences built in recent years, the “Georgia Avenue” corridor features some of Atlanta’s hottest restaurants and breweries. Still, expect crowds at any of these local businesses.

Official Event Description

Here is the official “log line” for the event: On August 1, storms into the Summerhill neighborhood from 5:00–7:00 PM ET. Oracle Red Bull Racing, Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, and Ford performance vehicles will roar down Hank Aaron Drive and Fulton Street, delivering a taste of elite motorsports in the heart of Atlanta.

This free, all-ages event is open to the public.

Expect a high-speed motorsports spectacle and demonstration featuring championship-winning cars and other moments you won’t want to miss. More vehicles and Red Bull athlete appearances are set to be announced soon.

Off the track, there will be fan zones with merchandise and additional activations for attendees.

Event Details

When: Sunday August 1st

Time: Officially 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Where: Summerhill – Just Southwest of Downtown Atlanta

Tickets: Tickets are not required, entry is free and is all ages.

Weather: No official statement on potential rain impacting the event. We expect the event to run rain or shine unless there is thunderstorms/lightning or heavy rain fall. Some current forecasts do indicate there may be up to 1/2 an inch of rain.

Getting There

Sadly there has been little official in the way of “getting there” or parking details. Here is what we know:

Address/Directions: While no “official” address has been posted, you can use Center Parc Stadium (the official name of Georgia State’s stadium which is the former Turner Field Braves Stadium). With expected road closures do not expect to get all the way to the stadium, however, Uber/Lyft may be able to get you close and MARTA will be running as well. Details below. You can use the directions/map to coordinate routes to the area. If we learn more we’ll be sure to update this post and our social media.

Parking: The typical lots for the Georgia State Stadium and the surrounding area are likely to be consumed by spectators and event spaces. Parking at the Publix shopping center may be restricted. Street parking and lots that use to host Braves parking on the east side of 75/85 from the stadium may be available. However, expect a significant walk, high parking costs and limited availability. Other decks or parking lots near the stadium may also be available, but we recommend being cautious about parking in lots that are not charging/active for the event as they may tow you.

Based on the official map expect Blue, Green lots, as well as those just west of Hank Aaron drive near the stadium to be used for the event. But there are a number of other potential lots that may be open as seen below. Parking prices may vary.

Public Transit: MARTA’s high frequency BRT line and MARTA rail will both be options. Based on current parking we’d expect the walk to be pretty similar to parking.

MARTA has not officially announced any plans to run enhanced services for the event that we are aware of, so trains may be crowded and typically do not run on high frequencies on Sundays.
