Atlanta Dragway Is For Sale
Atlanta Dragway, home to Southern Nationals NHRA event that brings the fastest dragsters to the metro area is up for sale. The track is owned the National National Hotrod Racing Association (NHRA) and was recently put up on the auction block. Despite this, they recently announced a 2021 date for the Southern Nationals events.
While the story of a major Atlanta racing facility potentially changing hands is always news, what makes this story even more intriguing is that the Atlanta Dragway may not stay a drag strip. It may not even stay a motorsports park at all.
Atlanta Dragway May Not Longer Be A Drag Strip
The Atlanta Business Chronicle is reporting that the 318 acre plot of land that makes up the Atlanta Dragway is being offered up as a “redevelopment” opportunity. This opens the door that the drag strip may be demolished and the track of land repurposes for another use, most likely an industrial or logistics park or residential community.
Commerce, where Atlanta Dragway is located, has experienced explosive growth recently. It’s location along I-85 just north of metro Atlanta makes is an ideal location for industrial and logistics companies seeking a deep workforce and low land prices. Additionally, Jefferson County, home to Commerce and the Atlanta Dragway, has grown nearly 25% since 2010. It’s also recently be the location of industrial developments and plants by Toyota and a 2.6 billion dollar SK Innovations plant.
Atlanta Dragway May Also Sell To Another Track Operator
It is also possible the Atlanta Dragway may sell to another track operator, or even split uses. Reports are that the track only consumes about half of Atlanta Dragway’s 318 acres. It’s possible a portion of the track may be split off for another use, while the track is still operated.
Check back for updated news on new ownership and/or uses. Last year we put attending a Fast Friday at Atlanta Dragway on our list of 10 Things Every Atlanta Car Enthusiast Should Do, it would be a shame to loose such an iconic track.
We also have talked recently about how drag racing is the most accessible form of competitive racing available. With so many things coming back in popularity, we truly hoped this easy to get into but hard to master motorsport would make a huge comeback. That isn’t going to be possible if all of the facilities close and become other uses.
