2021 NHRA Southern National Dates Announced
UPDATED: NHRA confirmed this will be the 40th and final Southern Nationals due to the sale of the Atlanta Dragway.
The NHRA announced their 2021 schedule this week. For the Atlanta Motrosports scene this includes the 40th anniversary Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway April 30th thru May 1st. The 2020 edition of the NHRA Southern Nationals was canceled due to COVID-19.
The 2021 NHRA Southern Nationals will be the 40th anniversary of the event, which has been held at Atlanta Dragway since 1981. It’s considered one of the premiere events on the NHRA schedule.
The Southern Nationals features the top classes in NHRA including Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock. It also attracts the top drivers, an should hopefully include the return of John Force’s team. John Force teams opted out of the 2020 season due to the lower number of races. He primarily cited concerns about his sponsor contracts.
One other interesting note about the 2021 schedule is that Bristol, TN will not host a race. Bristol has historically been considered one of the premiere NHRA races on the schedule. It’s absence from the 2021 is unexpected. Bristol Dragway released a statement holding out hope that there was still an opportunity to be included in the 2021 schedule.
We’re in conversations with NHRA and others about Bristol Dragway’s 2021 schedule and will provide updates and customer information when available.
