Formula 1 announced yesterday that they will be adding a second race in the United Stated. The new race, dubbed the Miami Grand Prix will run in 2022. The event is in addition to the existing United States Grand Prix that has been run annually since 2012, with the exception of 2020 when the race was canceled due to COVID-19.
“We are thrilled to announce that Formula 1 will be racing in Miami beginning in 2022,” said Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1.
“The USA is a key growth market for us, nd we are greatly encouraged by our growing reach in the US which will be further supported by this exciting second race. We will be working closely with the team from Hard Rock Stadium and the FIA to ensure the circuit delivers exciting racing but also leaves a positive and lasting contribution to the people in the local community.
The additional race in Miami is seen as an opportunity for F1 to grow interest and viewership in the US. Car enthusiasm is on a rise in the US and F1 hopes to capitalize on the trend. It also reverses a trend during the 2000s to retreat from the US in favor of developing countries.
Another contributor to the rise in interest of F1 racing is the ease of catching races. Shown regularly on cable TV and available for streaming, F1 has moved out of the shadows and obscure channels for viewing. This makes is a lot more accessible.
The Miami Grand Prix Course and Track Map
The track itself will be a route around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. It will be 3.36 mi (5.41km) with 19 turns. Cars are expected to reach speeds of up to 198 miles an hour.
The course itself is being created out of the parking lots that surround the stadium. The custom designed course should allow for great views and tailgating given the flat terrain.
Miami becomes the 11th US city to host a F1 race joining Indianapolis, Sebring, Riverside, Watkins Glen, Long Beach, Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix and Austin.
What It Means For Atlanta Car Enthusiasts
The Miami Grand Prix means there is another opportunity to see an F1 race close to Atlanta. A short flight with inexpensive non-stops or a long drive puts the Miami race nearly 1 hour closer by plane, and nearly 4 hours closer driving, than the Austin race.
While many Atlanta F1 enthusiasts would love to see F1 consider an even closer venue, this is still great news for fans of the sport in the US.

Miami’s race joins Austin, Montreal (Grand Prix of Canada) and Mexico City (Mexico Grand Prix) as the Norther American F1 Races.
